BUILD YOUR OWN GREEN HOUSE WITH A COMMERCIAL GREEN HOUSE KIT

Children like to take glass jars and turn them upside down over small plants, creating their own miniature green house and while a commercial green house is substantially bigger, the concept is exactly the same.

Casual growers, commercial growers, mad scientists, and school projects, today you can buy a great big green house, hobby green house, portable green house, or green house pictures (for those not ready to commit) of almost any shape and size with a commercial green house kit and become a green house grower.

The typical architecture of a commercial green house kit is aluminum or wood framing with glass or plastic green house windows. While not as popular yet, PVC is being seen more and more as a framing structure as well. For your green house project you can choose a box green house with a pitched roof, or round roof. These two designs serve an important function: 1) to let in the maximum amount of light and, 2) prevent snow from building up on the roof surface (which would defeat the first purpose!)

Glass Houses and Stones
A commercial green house kit using glass walls, gives the benefit of allowing more natural light to enter the building for warmth in the winter glass, however, does not hold heat well in winter and conducts too much heat in summer. For this reason, glass green houses are insulated in winter against heat loss and whitewashed in summer to prevent excessive heat build up. The glass is usually 1/8" thick and tempered to reduce the possibility of breakage during extreme temperature changes, or the occasional rock that gets thrown by the lawn mower while mowing around your garden green house. Your green house plans will have all the information you need on how to best care for your green house panels, whether they are glass or plastic.

Other commercial green house kits come with two or three thicknesses of polycarbonate green house panels. Polycarbonate (plastic) panels diffuse the sunlight as it enters and while they tend to hold heat better and are much less shatter resistant; they reduce natural light by about 20%.

There is also another commercial green house kit, (The Germinator, for example, is available from Greenhouse Kit.com) which is designed to be portable. It can be easily dismantled when not in use, or when you want to move it and the portable green houses typically come with a PVC frames and polycarbonate sheeting.

Other kits, provided mostly for the hobby grower, offer poly sheeting and aluminum frames to provide quality that can still meet the budgetary concerns of the homeowner.

Another advantage of buying a commercial green house kit is that they come in so many shapes and sizes; you can probably find one that fits in with your natural landscaping. Whether you're putting it close to your garden as a free-standing unit, or looking for a lean-to green house to be attached to your house, with the hundreds of styles available you can be sure to find a commercial green house kit that will fit in perfectly with your green house project.
