OPERATING A WHOLESALE GREEN HOUSESo you want to own a wholesale green house? Well, you need to plan. Loving to grow plants and play in the dirt simply isn’t enough to turn a profit and keep you in business year after year. There a special need of a wholesale green house that a far different from other wholesale businesses and you should research this business carefully well before opening your green house doors. Location, Location, Location! The Special Needs of Your Wholesale Green House These needs are very similar in scope with the considerations for any business, but the wholesale green house has to deal with them in a very special way. The first consideration, for just about any business, is location. This can be a particularly tricky problem for the operator of a wholesale green house as there are some very important things to consider when deciding on the site for your green house. It would be wonderful to have that perfect site right in the middle of shopping row, where tens of thousands of cars would drive by daily. The problem in this is that a wholesale green house needs a lot of space and less exposure to pollutants. There are all the plants in the long green houses, some sort of office, and a place for all the equipment. Then after all that, you still have to have a place for the customers to park. This can quickly add up to make the central commercial property much too expensive for the wholesale green house to operate. At the same time, you don’t want to go so far out, that you have trouble getting the utilities to run your business, so looking around the edge of town is usually the best option for green houses. This brings us to the second consideration. You may need to budget for a bit more advertising, or target it better, as people won’t be driving past your store front often enough. You should think about some way of directing your customers to your location, as it may be off the beaten path just a bit. Stocking some of your plants in a local grocer, green house pictures in doctor and dentist offices showing your produce, and discount certificates in local stores are all inexpensive ways to market your new wholesale green house. In location, we mentioned utilities. These are a going concern for any business, but a wholesale green house has to make special considerations. There may be a need for nighttime heaters, extra watering, and grow lights, which will all run the cost of the utilities up. This makes marketing and good decision-making all that much more important. Solid, researched decision-making is the key to the success of any business, be it a retail store or a wholesale green house. These problems are not insurmountable, and should not deter you from your wholesale green house. Just consider them, and make special room for them as you plan, and you should do well. |
